Talking Trash

 Press Release 3/30/21

******************************Talking Trash****************************

Good day everyone,

There has been much to-do lately about how the garbage service here in the City works and we are “talking trash” today to help clear up some misunderstandings.

Residential Garbage:

Residents are provided 1 trash receptacle, hereafter called a “Herbie Curbie”….just because it is fun to say.  The Herbie Curbie (HC) for trash is picked up weekly on Wednesday.  This is an all-day route that starts VERY early in the morning.  It is a good idea to have your Herbie Curbie out the night before just in case the garbage company is an earlier riser than you are.  Please see our website for what is allowed in these containers.  The list is thorough and the highlights are no toxic or yard waste.  HCs can be at the roadside no earlier than 8:00am Tuesday and must be brought in from the roadside no later than 8:00pm Thursday.

Residential Recycling:

Residents are also provided one recycling container (HC).  This is picked up every other week on Wednesday (schedule is on our website).  Also, refer to our website for items that can be placed in these containers.  Importantly, this is NOT a second garbage container, so take care to make sure that you do not place non-recyclable materials in this container.  If so, your HC will not be picked up and you will be responsible for the removal of the items.  For ELECTRONICS and other recycling events, go to the Berrien County website where you will find additional information: https://www.berriencounty.org/564/Berrien-County-Community-Recycling-event

Large or bulky items:

From time to time, everyone has something that is too big or bulky to fit in their HC.  The fees the City pays allow for ONE large item to be picked up per week.  HOWEVER, there is a procedure that you must follow to have the items removed BEFORE you drag anything out to the curb.  You MUST contact Lakeshore Recycling at 269-231-5623 (or a disposal company of your choice and financial responsibility) to make arrangements for it to be picked up.  Lakeshore does the large item pickups on Fridays unless other arrangements are made.  The items can be out at the curb no more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled pickup time.  If you have more than one bulky/large item or more trash than what will fit in your HC, you are responsible for the additional costs of the trash removal and will be billed by Lakeshore Recycling.
